Volvo Trucks has upgraded its Driver Alert Support system with an eye-tracking camera to better support truck drivers and increase road safety.Long-distance driving requires truck drivers to remain focused at all times. Volvo has upgraded its driver assistance systems to better detect and warn drivers who are distracted or drowsy. This more advanced system is designed to provide better support for drivers and help improve road safety.
The upgraded driver assistance system uses a dual-camera design to detect drowsy or distracted driving. A new eye-tracking camera, located above the truck's side display, detects signs of distraction and alerts the driver with a pop-up message and an audible warning. The existing system's front-facing camera continuously monitors driving behavior, precisely tracking the truck's position in relation to lanes and curbs, effectively identifying typical signs of fatigue or distracted driving.

Volvo Trucks' Driver Assistance System Upgraded
"After hours of driving long distances, drivers often struggle to stay alert and focused. The upgraded driver assistance system can more accurately detect drowsiness or distraction and alert the driver promptly. Our goal is to support drivers on the road and protect the safety of both drivers and all road users," said Anna Wrige Berling, Director of Traffic and Product Safety at Volvo Trucks.
"We are continuously developing and introducing more safety systems. Volvo Trucks' long-term vision is zero accidents, and safety remains at the heart of everything we do."
Volvo Trucks' Driver Assistance System Upgrade
The upgraded driver assistance system will be standard on Volvo's heavy-duty trucks (FH/FM series) and medium-duty trucks (FL/FE series) in the EU and some non-EU markets (such as Norway, Switzerland, and the UK), and optional in other markets. The new system will enter series production in November 2025. Outside the EU, Volvo Trucks will continue to offer the existing driver assistance system with a front camera.
Volvo Trucks Driver Assistance System Upgrade
Safety is a core value of Volvo Trucks. In the inaugural European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) heavy-duty truck safety test in 2024, its best-selling Volvo FH and FM models both achieved the highest five-star safety rating.
The following are the key features of Volvo's upgraded driver assistance system.
The core technology of the system is based on a dual-camera design. An eye-tracking camera detects the driver's gaze direction to identify signs of distraction, while a front-facing camera tracks road markings and intelligently compares them with the driver's steering movements.
When the system detects distraction or drowsiness, it immediately alerts the driver with a pop-up message and an audible warning.
If distracted driving persists, the system displays a new pop-up message and an upgraded acoustic warning.
The system automatically activates when the vehicle is started.
The driver assistance system can be manually deactivated (as required by the EU General Safety Regulation (GSR)).
